I have a lot of books and I haven't started yet.

Today a good friend came over and borrowed a book, Let the Right One In, by John Ajvide Lindqvist. This is not your traditional vampire book, but what is these days?

In a world full of Twilight and the Vampire Diaries people have become really desensitized in the paranormal genre. Today, people are more accustomed to paranormal romance as opposed to more gothic books.

Well I am going to say that I think Twilight is... not the best example of the vampire genre that there is. There I said it, I am not a fan of Twilight.

Twilight gets on my nerves for a myriad of reasons, but I'm not here to bash Twilight (maybe later). I'm here to sing the praises of a couple modern day vampire novels that have really stood out to me.

1. Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. This book is really creepy. It's a story that deals with the relationship between a bullied 12-year-old boy, Oskar, and a vampire named Eli. This book has everything from blood to prostitution. Overall it's a... really entertaining book to say the least and it may leave you a little grossed out.

2. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Now this is a very popular book that runs along the same line as The DaVinci Code. There is an epic search for the infamous Dracula (that's right, Dracula) that spans several countries. While I thought that the book could be a little heavy at times, it is full of vampire legend and lore that kept me interested. This book is a deffinately good for serious readers of the vampire genre since it is full of rich historical details.

Now I see the point of the Twilight saga and all, but these two books have really stood out to me as being the most true to the spirit of the original vampire novel, Dracula, than anything else. Remember, vampires are not supposed to be loving, caring, sparkling, beings. They are meant to be merciless, blood-sucking, creatures. :D

Fanfics

Ok everyone, I'm in the mood.

I really, really, really want to write some fanfic.

I only have one problem. WHAT SHALL I WRITE? There are so many fandoms that I consider to be a big part of me. Here, I shall name a few:

-Spring Awakening (the musical and the original play)

-Doctor Who

-Torchwood

-Harry Potter

Those are just the main ones.

Out of those choices, I just don't know what to write about. Usually my head is teeming with different stories and scenarios but now that I actually want to write something down it's just... dead. Nothing seems good enough. I can't decide on one single thing to write about. UGH.

The thing is, I don't even know what format I want to write in. A simple one-shot? Or a novel length epic adventure with a story arc that spans fifty chapters?

I'm desperate.

I have writer's block.

More tomorrow,

Sarah

Slightly Scandalous

So I'm sitting here in McDonald's wondering if anyone is ever going to read my blog.

It doesn't even come up in search engines. I tried.

Anyway, I suppose I should talk about the most recent book that I finished.

I dared myself to read a romance novel and while I was in Pennsylvania I came across a little cafe where the owner was selling a bunch of romance novels for 50 cents in the corner. I bought one.

Slightly Scandalous by Mary Balogh. I chose this book because there wasn't a ridiculous picture of some half naked guy and a woman with her boobs hanging out and also because it didn't have some revolting title like Undressing the Duke or something like that.

Surprisingly, this book ended up being a lot better than I had ever anticipated. It is the story about the sister of a duke, Lady Freyja Bedwyn and how she enters into a fake betrothal with the roguish Joshua Moore, the Marquess of Hallmere.

Slightly scandalous incidents ensue.

Of course this book was highly predictable. From the first page I knew that Lady Freyja and the Marquess would get together in the end, but it was entertaining nonetheless. I would liken it to a vacation for my brain. A welcome vacation what with all the stress that I've had lately.

Anyway, I would give this book oh, three out of five stars I guess. It wasn't Shakespeare but it did it's job well. And who knows, maybe this will prompt me to read the rest of the books in the series (Yes, it is part of a series. Each book is about another member of the Bedwyn family. There are six brothers and sisters in all.)

Anyways, til tomorrow,

Sarah

Welcome

...to my blog.

My name is Sarah and I am a college student living in upstate New York and this is my blog about reading and writing and all sorts of stuff.

This blog will feature talk about books and writing mostly, but every Friday is to be Off-Topic Friday (yay!) where I will talk about other things such as music, tv, movies, among many other things.

I hope you like my blog enough to follow it.
